Veronica Ball
The Ladies
Veronica Ball Trophy proved once again to be very successful.
Congratulations go to Kate de Fraja and Pam Oliver as winners.
Thanks to Alwyn for making this as enjoyable as ever!!
Veronica Ball was a member
of the club & the ladies team from the early 70’s until 1998
when she was diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease at the age of
56. One of the first symptoms was that she was no longer able
to hold her racket. She died in 2001. Once our new club house
was established, close friend Alwyn Whitney decided to hold an
annual ladies doubles tournament in her memory & raise funds for
Motor Neurone research at the same time. The tournament has run
for five years & we have raised close to £500 for the local
charity branch. The tournament is followed by a bring & share
supper in the club house & we raise a toast to an inspirational
lady who always looked for the positives in life – right to the
end.

An awesome start to the U15 Winter League
The
campaign began in the early hours of Sunday morning (well, it
was 10am but it felt a lot earlier). The team of Tom, Matt,
Natalie and Elena turned up at Market Harborough to see a couple
of their players powering the ball at each other and looking
decidedly good! Unperturbed, our intrepid band of players began
the match somewhat tentatively to start with. Tom and Matt soon
forged a winning partnership and quickly romped to a 6-2, 6-1
victory – 1-0 Market Bosworth. On the other court and
playing well beyond their years, Natalie and Elena stuck woman
fully to their task and ground out a wonderful 6-4, 6-4 win
against girls who regularly compete in U14 and U16 matches –
2-0 Market Bosworth. Especially worthy of note was Elena’s
performance. Quite simply, she was inspired. Throughout the
match she rarely missed a forehand, backhands were as straight
as an arrow and the squeal of delight when she hit an ace
against their best player brought a smile to the face of even
the home supporters! Well done Elena.
One more
win for the match, could it be done. Well simply, yes. Tom and
Natalie forged an immediate understanding and this excellent
partnership were in complete control against their No1 pairing
powering their way to a 6-2, 6-0 victory – 3-0 Market
Bosworth. Could we get maximum points? All the parents moved
to the lower courts (it was a tiered arrangement!) to see out
the final match. After having won the first set, Matt and Elena
were 5-3 down when we joined them. Despite the fact that Matt
doesn’t like his Mum watching, our presence was enough to see
the deficit quickly eradicated and the second set wrapped up at
7-5, Elena once again serving like a demon and raking forehands
cross court like there was no tomorrow (Matt was pretty damned
good too actually) – 4-0 Market Bosworth and 3 bonus
points for the win. 7-0 Market Bosworth. Whoo-hoo!!!!!
Congratulations to the players, an excellent morning and it made
the hour’s drive all the more worthwhile. We even put up with
Natalie and Elena’s jokes on the way back – the calibre was poor
but there was a small outbreak of laughter at ‘What do you call
a Chinese woman with a mixer on her head? Blenda!
